Playstation 1 doesn't like upscalers, Period.

Tried both (quality build) S-video and OEM standard composite I/O cables. Chroma signal was not detected in either scenario. It's not your fault people. Scaler isn't exactly top tier product, and PS1 is a real pig to cooperate with upgrade devices. Despite this, the scaler did enhance graphical appearance, even in black & white, that was noticeable. I am gonna experiment with procedures, i.e., switch On/Off in different hook-up patterns.
